Where should I start when learning Japanese on my own?

Start with hiragana and katakana. You can't use any vocabulary list until you can read the script. Once you know kana, move on to JLPT N5 vocabulary.

10 Daily starts with stroke order animations for every kana character and continues through JLPT N1 in the same app.

How many Japanese words should I learn a day?

Ten words, about 10 minutes, is enough. What decides whether you succeed is not how much you study in one day but whether you keep going. If you have ever bought a thick vocabulary book and quit after three days, the problem was the amount, not your willpower.

Ten words a day adds up to 300 words in a month and 3,600 in a year.

Why do I keep forgetting the Japanese words I learn?

That's normal. According to the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve, people forget much of what they learn by the next day. The trick is to review a word just before you forget it, and that timing is almost impossible to manage yourself.

Before each new level unlocks, 10 Daily brings back earlier words after 1, 3, 7 and 14 days, so they move from short-term into long-term memory.

What JLPT level do I need to study or work in Japan?

Japanese language schools usually accept students at around N5 to N4. Universities and vocational schools generally ask for N2 or higher. For jobs, N2 is commonly treated as the minimum for passing document screening, and some roles require N1. Requirements vary, so check with the school or employer.

How can I check my pronunciation when studying alone?

Say the word out loud in the Tokyo Tower mini-game and speech recognition judges your pronunciation. Every word includes native speaker audio, which also plays offline.

Is 10 Daily free?

Downloading the app and the core lessons are free. Some content, such as in-depth study, the listening playlist and the grammar library, is fully available with Premium.
